May 2017: Where it go and how did it get there?

June 15, 2017 Frances Ranger

Since it took me two weeks to get this list out for May, I'm going to give myself permission not to say much. Some of these books felt like they took a long time to read, so I'm actually a little surprised to see how many of them there are.

If I had to choose one book in particular to recommend of May's reading, it would be The Spawning Grounds by Gail Anderson-Dargatz. There has been a lot of discussion lately about cultural appropriation. I think this novel is a beautiful example of cultural appreciation. It draws on Canadian First Nations mythology to inspire a story of the intertwined and challenging relationships between white settlers and Native people across generations of a small community.

Other books I read in May:

Cigar Box Banjo by Paul Quarrington

Yiddish for Pirates by Gary Baldwin

Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeline Thien

Us Conductors by Sean Michaels

Invisible Influence by Jonah Berger

The Massey Murder by Charlotte Gray

Lady Cop Makes Trouble by Amy Stewart
