May 2026: Warm enough to wander in the woods

June 7, 2026 Frances Ranger
Watercolour painting of a white trillium

Painted by me from a photo I took. I could be more assertive with the colours, but I like how the leafmeal looks on the ground.

Game Changers by Rachel Reid. A reread of the first novel in this series. Why yes, I did end up buying them. I am inevitably going to reread them all again, and I like the idea of just having them available.

Don’t Let Him In by Lisa Jewell. The “him” of the title is a charmer, playboy, husband (several times over), a con man, and a narcissist. He adopts new personas and insinuates his way into the lives – and bank accounts – of women all over England. Finally, one young woman recognizes that his stories just don’t add up when he swoops in to her mother’s life. But can she put the pieces together before her mother, like several before her, loses everything?

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. This time travel romance/spy thriller takes place in fairly near future London, where the newly established Ministry of Time has taken individuals (who were about to die anyway) out of their own time period and in to the modern day. Each of these “expats” is paired with a Ministry employee “bridge” whose job is to orient them to modern London life. I just stumbled into a reddit thread about this book; my goodness, do people have feelings about it. From “worse book ever! I’ll never trust another bookstore employee reco” to “I loved it! It was hilarious!” I was definitely closer to the latter descriptor. I got a big kick out of the fish out of water humour and I really like the author’s way with unusual but apt descriptors, Not for sci fi purists - ewww, there’s kissing.

Towards the end of the month, I started reading The Count of Monte Cristo. Holy smokes, that is a long book. Based on my pace, June might be a one book month. Stay tuned.
