Freshly knit, just in time for real winter weather. I’ve made this hoodie three times now in progressively larger sizes for growing kids.
It’s simple to knit, requiring only knits and purls and easy-peasy increases/decreases. Lion Brand identifies it as Beginner (Level 1), and I think it’s an excellent first garment for beginner knitters.
EXCEPT
The length measurements are ridiculously short for every piece in every size. Choose your size by appropriate chest size, and measure for everything else. You’ll likely need an extra skein of yarn than identified in the pattern because of the length adjustments you’ll want to make.
For example, Aaron here is wearing the Adult small. I added 4 inches to the sleeves and 2 inches to the hood. I could have added an inch or two to the body for growing room, but alas I didn’t. My gauge was bang on, so it was a pattern issue.
That all said, it’s soooo cozy and Aaron loves it.
With the soft, bulky yarn and basic pattern, it’s one of those pieces that I don’t even have to really look at while knitting other than for turning rows. It took maybe 3 weeks from start to finish in my spare time. And the Lion Brand Home Spun yarn offers beautiful colourways and holds up pretty well to washing. The outgrown versions have been handed down and continue to be enjoyed by smaller cousins.
You’ll find the pattern here. Lion Brand requires a log in to get to their free patterns, but their extensive library is well worth sharing your email addy for.
